Estimate the Effort to Make a Batch of Documents Accessible

Remediation is scheduled by document count, and document count is not the work.

What this guide helps you do

Turn a document count, an image count, and per-item timings into minutes per document and hours for the batch.

Who this guide is for

Teams planning accessibility remediation across a set of word-processing documents.

Use the source document or official route that applies to your situation. This guide does not contact another person or verify external information.

Steps

  1. Count the documents

Count the files in the batch. Group them by template so the timings are comparable.

  2. Count the images

Count the images, charts, and diagrams in a typical document. Each one needs a considered description.

  3. Time one image

Time yourself writing one useful description and use that figure. Rushed descriptions are rework.

  4. Time the base work

Time the headings, reading order, table headers, and link text checks for one document.

  5. Multiply for the batch

Add the image time to the base time and multiply by the document count. Divide by 60 for hours.

Worked example

Twelve documents with 8 images each at 3 minutes an image and 10 minutes of base work is 34 minutes each, 408 minutes in total, and 6.8 hours.
