Count Bulb Planting Positions in a Bed — Free
A bed can look large and still hold fewer bulbs than expected once the spacing you chose is applied to both directions. Count positions on a square grid instead of dividing the area by a bare number.
The proof surface
Seed-tray and frost-date tools plan when to sow. This counts positions in an existing bed using a spacing decision you make, and it never recommends a species, depth or planting date.
Why the flat version breaks
Dividing total area by spacing
That mixes two directions and usually overcounts a rectangular bed.
Mixing centimetres and metres
A hundredfold length error changes the count by ten thousand.
Treating the grid as planting advice
Depth, season, soil and species suitability are not modelled here.
How to work the bulb spacing grid
Measure the gap you want between neighbouring bulbs. The illustrative 10 cm setting is a planning assumption, not horticultural advice; different species need different spacing.
Enter the width and depth you will actually plant. Leave out paths, tree roots and the strip you want to keep for annuals so the grid reflects real ground.
A 120 cm by 40 cm border holds twelve positions across and four deep. That is 48 positions; the second bed adds 54, giving 102 for the sample.
A bed narrower than one spacing holds no positions on this grid and is flagged. Adjust the spacing or the bed outline deliberately, then record the change rather than squeezing bulbs in.
What the bulb spacing grid replaces
| Question | Before | Visible working |
|---|---|---|
| Dividing total area by spacing | That mixes two directions and usually overcounts a rectangular bed. | Measure the usable bed, not the lawn |
| Mixing centimetres and metres | A hundredfold length error changes the count by ten thousand. | Round each direction down |
| Treating the grid as planting advice | Depth, season, soil and species suitability are not modelled here. | Read a zero as a real answer |

FIRST-LOAD
Research prototype — checkout unavailable. Input is processed locally and a draft is saved automatically in this browser profile when storage is available. Reset to sample clears that draft; Pro history has its own clear button. A state link encodes your inputs in its URL: share only non-sensitive rows. Browser history, clipboard and anyone receiving the link may retain it. Optional AI use below leaves this device; it is not required.
This is a spacing grid arithmetic tool, not gardening advice. Confirm species, planting depth, season and soil suitability with a supplier or horticultural reference before planting.
Data note: Everything runs in this browser tab on the bulb spacing grid: your bed or border | width cm | depth cm stays on this device, nothing is uploaded, and the reading is rebuilt only when you press run.
Go deeper: the companion app files the same reading as a scored comparison matrix
The article demo above runs without limits. The companion app keeps a local history, exports the rows as CSV, prints the bulb spacing grid reading, and holds your drafts on this device — one complete free run; the proposed $4 one-time filing layer is not currently for sale.
The bulb spacing grid reading is complete for free. The optional $4 layer adds print, row CSV and the last five local reading summaries; it does not add hidden answers. Checkout is not configured yet; the article demo remains unlimited.

What this is built on
- Method: A 120 cm by 40 cm border holds twelve positions across and four deep. That is 48 positions; the second bed adds 54, giving 102 for the sample.
- All sample records are invented examples. The app does not fetch measurements, policies, files or personal records.
- Google’s official pricing page, fetched 2026-09-29, lists free-tier access including AI Studio. Optional formatting only; limits and availability can change. Free-tier content may be used to improve products. Never paste private records there.
Before: That mixes two directions and usually overcounts a rectangular bed. After: the bulb spacing grid shows the working beside each named row so the reader can change the assumption and inspect the consequence.
Optional AI formatting, not calculation
For this bulb spacing grid, use the free AI Studio interface only if available to you, with no paid API key. Manual entry completes the same workflow for free. Supply only fictional or non-sensitive notes. Review its output against the source; never paste unresolved questions into the numeric rows.
Format my non-sensitive notes for a bulb spacing grid. Return plain rows only: bed or border | width cm | depth cm. Preserve supplied quantities exactly. Do not guess missing values; list questions separately. Do not calculate or add advice. I will check every row before pasting into the local tool.
Accepted schema: bed or border | width cm | depth cm. No AI response is executed as code.
