Work Backwards From a Click Target to the List You Need
A click target is easy to set and hard to reach with the list you have.
What this guide helps you do
Turn a click target and two rates into the opens, the sends, and the extra names the target needs.
Who this guide is for
Small organisations planning a newsletter or campaign around an outcome rather than a send.
Use the source document or official route that applies to your situation. This guide does not contact another person or verify external information.
Steps
Set the click target
Write the clicks you need. Tie the number to an outcome, such as registrations.
Write the open rate
Write the open rate you have actually achieved, in percent. Use your own history, not a benchmark.
Write the click rate
Write the share of opens that click, in percent. This is usually a small number.
Work back to opens
Divide the clicks by the click rate. That is the opens you need.
Work back to sends
Divide the opens by the open rate and round up. Subtract your current list to see the gap.
Worked example
You want 50 clicks with a 20 percent open rate and a 2.5 percent click rate on an 8,000-name list. That needs 2,000 opens, 10,000 sends, and 2,000 extra names.
Use your own source and details. The example is not a record about a real person or organization.
What this source supports: Average open rates vary widely by industry, but open rate alone is a rough signal; click and conversion rates matter more.
Source limit: Benchmarks are averages; your own list quality and content determine results.
These sources support the statements above. They do not show that every person needs this guide. They do not show a specific result.
Limits
This guide works backwards from the rates you enter. It does not predict real campaign performance.
Benchmarks are averages; your own list quality and content determine results.

Common questions
What does the App compute?
Turn a click target and two rates into the opens, the sends, and the extra names the target needs.
What does the App not do?
This App works backwards from the rates you enter. It does not send email, measure a real campaign, or predict performance.
Where do the numbers come from?
You enter every number yourself. The sources support the method and the limits. They do not produce a result for your specific case. Keep the original documents next to the sheet you build.
