Budget the Hours to Write the Flashcards, Not Just Review Them

A review schedule assumes the cards exist, and writing a good card takes longer than most study plans allow.

What this guide helps you do

Turn cards, minutes a card, days available, and daily minutes into writing time and a shortfall.

Who this guide is for

Anyone building a flashcard deck for a course or exam.

Use the source document or official route that applies to your situation. This guide does not contact another person or verify external information.

Steps

  1. Count the cards

Count the cards you need, one idea a card. Two ideas a card is two cards.

  2. Time one card

Write five cards and divide the minutes by five.

  3. Count the days

Use the days before the deck needs to be in use, not the exam date.

  4. Set the daily limit

Use the minutes a day you can write, separate from review time.

  5. Read the shortfall

If the shortfall is positive, cut cards or start earlier.

Worked example

One hundred and twenty cards at 1.5 minutes each is 180 minutes. Over ten days that is 18 minutes a day, with 12 minutes spare against a 30-minute limit.

  1. Writing time = 120 cards × 1.5 minutes = 180 minutes
  2. Daily need = 180 ÷ 10 days = 18 minutes
  3. Spare = 30 minutes a day - 18 = 12 minutes

Use your own source and details. The example is not a record about a real person or organization.
