flight entitlement board / travel

Work Out What a Delayed or Cancelled Flight Is Actually Worth — Free

A delay or a cancellation usually arrives with a voucher offer and a vague mention of compensation. The statutory entitlement, if it applies, is a fixed amount per passenger, and comparing it with the offer takes two minutes once both numbers are on one board.

Why the flat version breaks

A complaints process runs on numbers: the amount claimed per passenger, the number of passengers and the difference between the offer and the entitlement. A board with those three on it produces a claim letter that is short, specific and hard to answer vaguely.

How to use the flight entitlement board in four passes

Find the entitlement for the disruption you had

Rules set different fixed amounts by distance and by how late you arrived, and the figures change over time. Enter the amount that applies to your flight and note where you read it.

Convert the offer to the same basis

A travel voucher is not cash. If the offer is a credit, enter its face value and note the restriction — the board compares figures, and the difference in form is worth stating in the claim.

Count every passenger

Entitlements are usually per passenger, so a family of four is four claims. This is the single most common arithmetic error in a compensation claim.

Claim the difference in writing

State the flight, the date, the amount per passenger, the number of passengers and the rule you are relying on. Ask for a written decision rather than continuing with the offer on the phone.

SAMPLE DATA, NOT A VERIFIED CLAIM: the starter record compares a 250-per-passenger entitlement with a 30 voucher across two passengers on a six-hour delay. Replace these values with your own source before you rely on anything.

What breaks first

Accepting a voucher as the whole answer

A voucher with an expiry date and a restriction is worth less than the entitlement and does not settle a statutory claim in most schemes. Compare the figures before accepting anything.

Claiming per booking instead of per passenger

A claim for one passenger on a four-passenger booking gives away three quarters of the value. Check the booking and count everyone who was disrupted.

Arguing about fairness instead of the rule

Airlines answer claims that cite a rule and a figure, and they answer vague complaints with goodwill vouchers. Quote the rule, the flight and the amount.

Boundary: This compares figures you enter; it is not legal advice and it does not decide whether compensation is owed. Entitlement schemes, amounts, time limits and the extraordinary-circumstances defence differ by jurisdiction and by airline — check the current rule and your eligibility with the operating carrier and, if a claim is refused, with the national enforcement body or a qualified adviser.
