Total the Attendance Fee and Mileage for a Summons

Jury service pays a little, and the little is worth claiming properly.

What this guide helps you do

Turn days served, a daily fee, and round-trip miles into the fee total, the mileage total, and the combined amount.

Who this guide is for

Jurors keeping track of what a summons pays back, and employers explaining the gap.

Use the source document or official route that applies to your situation. This guide does not contact another person or verify external information.

Steps

  1. Count the days

Count the days you attended, including days the court released you early if the rules count them.

  2. Write the daily fee

Write the attendance fee the court states for each day of service.

  3. Write the round trip

Write the round-trip miles from home to the courthouse. Use the same route each day.

  4. Write the mileage rate

Write the mileage rate the court applies, in cents per mile.

  5. Add the two totals

Multiply the days by the fee, and the miles by the days and the rate. Add the two results.

Worked example

Five days at $50 with 34 round-trip miles at 70 cents is $250.00 in fees, $119.00 in mileage, and $369.00 in total.

Use your own source and details. The example is not a record about a real person or organization.
