Build a Jury Duty Hardship Request From Your Own Dates — Free

A jury summons is not a problem until it collides with a shift rota, a care arrangement or a hospital appointment, and by then the response window is short. Put the whole thing on a docket with dates: what conflicts, what evidence shows it, who has to write the letter, and when the request has to arrive.

The proof surface

Free path: the card computes locally in the browser with no key and no account. Where an AI step helps, any free chat assistant works — Google AI Studio's free tier and Groq's free tier were both no-card and rate-limited when this page was reviewed on 2026-09-13 (limits change; check before you rely on them).

Why the flat version breaks

The summons tells you what to do and by when. It does not tell you which of your own commitments needs an employer's letter, or that the childcare receipts have to exist before you write the request. A docket with dates makes the evidence part of the plan instead of a scramble the day before.

How to run the docket in four passes

Copy the summons details before you do anything else

Reporting date, reporting time, court name and reference. Every later step depends on them, and the letter itself is the only place they appear correctly.

List the conflicts with times, not adjectives

A rota showing 07:00 starts and 19:30 finishes, and a care arrangement with named hours, are the substance of a hardship request. "Very difficult" is not something a clerk can act on.

Put the evidence steps before the writing step

The employer's letter and the childcare receipts have to exist before the request is written, otherwise the request says what the evidence was going to be. The docket is ordered to enforce that sequence.

Send it the way the court asks, then confirm receipt

Courts specify post, portal or email, and they specify a deadline that is about arrival, not sending. Keep the clerk's name and the proof of posting; add the confirmation as a finished row when it comes.

SAMPLE DATA, NOT A VERIFIED CLAIM: Summons 44-8821 · reporting 28 Sep 2026 · clerk call 19 Sep · employer letter 25 Sep · childcare receipts 26 Sep. Replace these values with your own source before you rely on anything.

What breaks first

Assuming a request is granted

Postponement and excusal are decisions the court makes, not choices you make. Until you hear back, plan to attend — never skip an appearance because a request is in the post.

Sending the request without the supporting letter

A hardship claim without an employer's letter or receipts is an assertion. The docket puts those steps first precisely because they take the longest to obtain.

Missing the deadline to the day

Postal delivery and portal queues are not part of the court's deadline. Aim to send the request at least five working days before the printed date and keep the posting receipt.
