Count the Water a Low-Flow Showerhead Saves in a Year
A fixture swap sounds small until you multiply it by every shower in a year.
What this guide helps you do
Turn two flow rates and a shower habit into gallons saved each year and the money those gallons carry.
Who this guide is for
Households deciding whether a low-flow fixture is worth the swap.
Use the source document or official route that applies to your situation. This guide does not contact another person or verify external information.
Steps
Read both flow rates
Read the gallons per minute on the old fixture and the new one. The label usually carries it.
Time a shower
Time a normal shower in minutes. Use a typical one, not the shortest.
Count the showers
Count the showers your household takes in a week.
Subtract and multiply
Subtract the new rate from the old, multiply by the minutes, then by the weekly showers.
Price the gallons
Multiply the weekly gallons by 52, then divide by 1,000 and multiply by your rate per thousand gallons.
Worked example
You move from 2.5 to 1.75 gallons a minute over 8-minute showers, seven times a week, at $3.50 per thousand gallons. That is 2,184 gallons and $7.64 a year.
