Split a Paint Mix Into Colour and Medium Volumes — Free

A ratio is not a recipe until it meets a volume. Split each batch’s total millilitres by its parts ratio and write down the colour and medium to actually measure out.

The proof surface

Thread yield tools count material from cuts. This portions material into mixes: parts colour against parts medium scaled to a batch volume you choose, per named mix.

Sample, not your facts: Illustrative sample: Sky wash | 1 | 4; Full strength | 1 | 0. With total batch volume in ml set to 500, colour volume is 600.00 ml of colour.

Why the flat version breaks

Reading 1:4 as one part in four total

It is one part in five — the parts add.

Mixing a bigger batch than the piece needs

Pigment wasted is pigment dried in the jar.

Assuming wet colour is dry colour

Drying shift is real; swatch it.

How to work the mixing ratio beaker

Write the ratio in parts

One to four means one part colour for every four parts medium — five parts in total. Parts are unitless; the batch volume gives them size.

Set one batch volume for the run

The sample mixes 500 ml per named batch. A sky wash at 1:4 takes 100 ml of colour and 400 of medium; a full-strength mix at 1:0 takes all 500 ml as colour.

Measure, don’t eyeball the split

The tool reports each row’s colour volume, with the medium volume in the note; the summary totals colour across mixes so you know how much tube to open. A zero-colour row is a pure medium batch and is allowed; a zero-zero ratio is rejected because it names no mix.

Scale down before you waste pigment

If 500 ml is more than the piece needs, lower the batch volume and re-run — ratios stay identical. Drying shift, pigment load and brand behaviour are not modelled; keep a swatch beside the wet mix.

FIRST-LOAD

Input is processed locally and a draft is saved automatically in this browser profile when storage is available. Reset to sample clears that draft; Pro history has its own clear button. A state link encodes your inputs in its URL: share only non-sensitive rows. Browser history, clipboard and anyone receiving the link may retain it. Optional AI use below leaves this device; it is not required.

Studio arithmetic on ratios and volumes you choose. Not a formulation, archival or colour-matching guarantee; pigment behaviour varies by brand and medium — test on a swatch.

Data note: Everything runs in this browser tab on the mixing ratio beaker: your mix | parts colour | parts medium stays on this device, nothing is uploaded, and the reading is rebuilt only when you press run.

Go deeper: the companion app files the same reading as a index card with a stamped header

The article demo above runs without limits. The companion app keeps a local history, exports the rows as CSV, prints the mixing ratio beaker reading, and holds your drafts on this device — one free run, then $ 4 one-time for the layer that keeps filing.

The mixing ratio beaker reading is complete for free. The optional $4 layer adds print, row CSV and the last five local reading summaries; it does not add hidden answers. Checkout is not configured yet; the article demo remains unlimited.

What this is built on

Before: It is one part in five — the parts add. After: the mixing ratio beaker shows the working beside each named row so the reader can change the assumption and inspect the consequence.

Optional AI formatting, not calculation

For this mixing ratio beaker, use the free AI Studio interface only if available to you, with no paid API key. Manual entry completes the same workflow for free. Supply only fictional or non-sensitive notes. Review its output against the source; never paste unresolved questions into the numeric rows.

Format my non-sensitive notes for a mixing ratio beaker. Return plain rows only: mix | parts colour | parts medium. Preserve supplied quantities exactly. Do not guess missing values; list questions separately. Do not calculate or add advice. I will check every row before pasting into the local tool.

Accepted schema: mix | parts colour | parts medium. No AI response is executed as code.
