Measure How Much Alt Text a PDF Batch Is Missing

A tagged PDF can still arrive with figures that have no description, and the gap is countable before you fix it.

What this guide helps you do

Turn figure count, figures with alt text, and writing minutes into a coverage share and the hours to close it.

Who this guide is for

Designers and publishers preparing a batch of PDFs for public release.

Use the source document or official route that applies to your situation. This guide does not contact another person or verify external information.

Steps

  1. Count the figures

Count images, charts, and diagrams that carry meaning. Decorative images do not need a description.

  2. Count the described ones

Count the figures whose alt text you would keep as written.

  3. Time one description

Write one and time it. Charts take longer than simple images.

  4. Read the coverage

The App shows the share already described before you plan the work.

  5. Read the hours

The hours are the missing figures multiplied by your writing time.

Worked example

One hundred and twenty figures with 45 described leaves 75 missing. At six minutes each that is 450 minutes, or 7.50 hours.

  1. Missing = 120 figures - 45 described = 75
  2. Coverage = 45 ÷ 120 = 37.5 percent
  3. Hours = 75 × 6 minutes = 450 minutes, or 7.50 hours

Use your own source and details. The example is not a record about a real person or organization.

Compare two worked cases

Both cases are examples, not records about a real person. The bars show the same numbers the free App computes.
