bleed-edge caliper

Check Whether a Poster Canvas Includes Your Chosen Bleed — Free

The canvas can be larger than the trim and still leave too little bleed. Halve the extra width to estimate the margin on each side, then compare it with the printer’s requirement you entered.

The proof surface

Typesetting checks measure text line fit. This caliper checks the physical canvas extension around a trimmed poster, edge by edge, rather than font measure or page count.

Why the flat version breaks

Entering the finished trim as canvas

A document with equal canvas and trim has no bleed extension.

Comparing opposite dimensions

Width-to-height comparisons give a meaningless margin; calculate them independently.

Assuming sufficient bleed proves a press-ready file

The tool only compares two numbers and cannot inspect the artwork or export.

How to work the bleed-edge caliper

Keep canvas and trim on the same axis

Compare width with width, then repeat the check for height as a separate row. Enter millimetres in both columns.

Subtract trim from canvas

The total extension is shared by two edges, so the estimated bleed per edge is (canvas width − trim width) ÷ 2.

Supply the printer’s requested bleed

Use the production brief or print provider’s value. The three-millimetre worked example is invented, not an industry rule.

Check all four edges and export marks

The calculator checks one dimension at a time. It cannot see artwork reaching the edge, crop marks, safe areas or a PDF export setting.

FIRST-LOAD

Input is processed locally and a draft is saved automatically in this browser profile when storage is available. Reset to sample clears that draft; Pro history has its own clear button. A state link encodes your inputs in its URL: share only non-sensitive rows. Browser history, clipboard and anyone receiving the link may retain it. Optional AI use below leaves this device; it is not required.

Print-layout arithmetic only, not a printer’s technical approval, colour-management check or licensing review. Confirm all four edges and file settings with the print provider; request a proof before production. This calculation cannot inspect artwork placement or validate an exported file.

Data note: Everything runs in this browser tab on the bleed-edge caliper: your layout | canvas width mm | trim width mm stays on this device, nothing is uploaded, and the reading is rebuilt only when you press run.

Go deeper: the companion app files the same reading as a climbing rung ladder

The article demo above runs without limits. The companion app keeps a local history, exports the rows as CSV, prints the bleed-edge caliper reading, and holds your drafts on this device — one free run, then $ 4 one-time for the layer that keeps filing.

The bleed-edge caliper reading is complete for free. The optional $4 layer adds print, row CSV and the last five local reading summaries; it does not add hidden answers. Checkout is not configured yet; the article demo remains unlimited.

What this is built on

Before: A document with equal canvas and trim has no bleed extension. After: the bleed-edge caliper shows the working beside each named row so the reader can change the assumption and inspect the consequence.

Optional AI formatting, not calculation

For this bleed-edge caliper, an external AI text tool may help format non-sensitive notes if you already use one. No AI service or account is required: manual entry completes the same free core calculation. Do not paste private or sensitive data. Review every value against the source before using it.

Format my non-sensitive notes for a bleed-edge caliper. Return plain rows only: layout | canvas width mm | trim width mm. Preserve supplied quantities exactly. Do not guess missing values; list questions separately. Do not calculate or add advice. I will check every row before pasting into the local tool.

Accepted schema: layout | canvas width mm | trim width mm. No AI response is executed as code.

Walk three labelled examples

First reading. The invented sample A4 portrait | 214 | 210 uses required bleed per edge in millimetres = 3. The displayed smallest measured edge bleed is 2.00000 bleed mm per edge. Follow the row note back to the measurements and conversion rather than treating the headline number as a recommendation. The sample is deliberately concrete so the reader can reproduce the arithmetic by hand.

Changed assumption. The alternate input Event poster | 218 | 210 produces 4.00000 bleed mm per edge for the displayed summary. Compare it with the first reading to see which entered quantity moves the result. In a real plan, change only the assumption that has a traceable source; do not tune a value just to make a row pass.

Boundary case. With Exact bleed | 216 | 210 and the same setting, the worked result is 3.00000 bleed mm per edge. This case shows how the arithmetic behaves at a useful edge, not that the underlying process has been measured or verified. Check the boundary statement beside the result and confirm any consequential input with the responsible person before acting.
