Calculate the Extra Area Around a Bleed Trim — Free

Bleed surrounds all four edges, so adding it to only one width and height understates the artwork area. Inspect the expanded dimensions before building a print file.

The proof surface

Print-run break-even tools model money. This checks the geometry of bleed around a rectangular trim, without selecting a printer specification or nesting pieces onto stock.

Sample, not your facts: Illustrative sample: Invitation | 105 | 148; Mini poster | 210 | 297. With bleed added on each edge in millimetres set to 3, total is 46.32 extra square centimetres.

Why the flat version breaks

Adding bleed only once

Each dimension has two edges receiving the allowance.

Putting text in the bleed

Bleed is expected to be trimmed, not a safe content zone.

Using the sample as a printer rule

Production requirements must come from the actual printer.

How to work the trim chase

Use finished trim dimensions

Enter the intended cut width and height in millimetres. Do not enter a file size that already includes bleed or the allowance will be counted twice.

Ask the printer for the allowance

The sample three millimetres is illustrative. Use the printer’s actual instruction and keep its safe-area, crop-mark and export requirements separate.

Add bleed on both sides

Expanded width is trim width plus twice the bleed; height follows the same rule. Subtract trim area from expanded area and divide by one hundred for square centimetres.

Inspect the exported artwork

Extend backgrounds into the bleed and keep essential content within the printer’s safe area. The note gives expanded dimensions, but the tool does not inspect the PDF or guarantee cutting accuracy.

FIRST-LOAD

Input is processed locally and a draft is saved automatically in this browser profile when storage is available. Reset to sample clears that draft; Pro history has its own clear button. A state link encodes your inputs in its URL: share only non-sensitive rows. Browser history, clipboard and anyone receiving the link may retain it. Optional AI use below leaves this device; it is not required.

Rectangular geometry only, not print-production approval. Confirm bleed, safe area, marks and file settings with the printer.

Data note: Everything runs in this browser tab on the trim chase: your print piece | trim width mm | trim height mm stays on this device, nothing is uploaded, and the reading is rebuilt only when you press run.

Go deeper: the companion app files the same reading as a plotted bar chart sheet

The article demo above runs without limits. The companion app keeps a local history, exports the rows as CSV, prints the trim chase reading, and holds your drafts on this device — one free run, then $ 4 one-time for the layer that keeps filing.

The trim chase reading is complete for free. The optional $4 layer adds print, row CSV and the last five local reading summaries; it does not add hidden answers. Checkout is not configured yet; the article demo remains unlimited.

What this is built on

Before: Each dimension has two edges receiving the allowance. After: the trim chase shows the working beside each named row so the reader can change the assumption and inspect the consequence.

Optional AI formatting, not calculation

For this trim chase, use the free AI Studio interface only if available to you, with no paid API key. Manual entry completes the same workflow for free. Supply only fictional or non-sensitive notes. Review its output against the source; never paste unresolved questions into the numeric rows.

Format my non-sensitive notes for a trim chase. Return plain rows only: print piece | trim width mm | trim height mm. Preserve supplied quantities exactly. Do not guess missing values; list questions separately. Do not calculate or add advice. I will check every row before pasting into the local tool.

Accepted schema: print piece | trim width mm | trim height mm. No AI response is executed as code.
