Count Reading Nights for a List at Your Own Pace — Free

A reading list shrinks faster when you already know your nightly pace. Convert remaining pages into evenings, and keep a partially finished book visible instead of counting it as done.

The proof surface

Manuscript planning counts writing days for a draft. This converts remaining pages into reading nights at a pace you choose, and it does not set a reading target, difficulty level or deadline.

Why the flat version breaks

Dividing the whole list by one pace

Reference books often read at a different speed from novels.

Counting a part-read book as finished

Unread pages still take nights.

Treating the total as a deadline

The pace is an input, and a slower reader is not behind.

How to work the nightly page ruler

Use your real nightly pace

Pick a page count you can usually finish without skimming, and note that dense reference pages take longer than fiction. The illustrative 25 pages is an assumption, not a target.

Subtract what is already read

Remaining pages for each book are the total minus the pages already read. A 190-page novel with 30 pages read leaves 160, which at 25 pages a night is seven nights.

Round up to whole nights

Divide the remainder by your pace and round up, because an unfinished evening still occupies the evening. The sample list needs ten nights in total.

Plan the part-nights

A remainder that does not divide exactly is flagged so the last evening is a short one. Recheck the list when a book is abandoned or returned, and let the plan change with the reader.

FIRST-LOAD

Research prototype — checkout unavailable. Input is processed locally and a draft is saved automatically in this browser profile when storage is available. Reset to sample clears that draft; Pro history has its own clear button. A state link encodes your inputs in its URL: share only non-sensitive rows. Browser history, clipboard and anyone receiving the link may retain it. Optional AI use below leaves this device; it is not required.

This is a personal pace estimate from the numbers you enter. It is not a reading programme, assessment or expectation for any learner; adjust the pace until it matches the actual reader.

Data note: Everything runs in this browser tab on the nightly page ruler: your book | total pages | pages already read stays on this device, nothing is uploaded, and the reading is rebuilt only when you press run.

Go deeper: the companion app files the same reading as a plotted bar chart sheet

The article demo above runs without limits. The companion app keeps a local history, exports the rows as CSV, prints the nightly page ruler reading, and holds your drafts on this device — one complete free run; the proposed $4 one-time filing layer is not currently for sale.

The nightly page ruler reading is complete for free. The optional $4 layer adds print, row CSV and the last five local reading summaries; it does not add hidden answers. Checkout is not configured yet; the article demo remains unlimited.

What this is built on

Before: Reference books often read at a different speed from novels. After: the nightly page ruler shows the working beside each named row so the reader can change the assumption and inspect the consequence.

Optional AI formatting, not calculation

For this nightly page ruler, use the free AI Studio interface only if available to you, with no paid API key. Manual entry completes the same workflow for free. Supply only fictional or non-sensitive notes. Review its output against the source; never paste unresolved questions into the numeric rows.

Format my non-sensitive notes for a nightly page ruler. Return plain rows only: book | total pages | pages already read. Preserve supplied quantities exactly. Do not guess missing values; list questions separately. Do not calculate or add advice. I will check every row before pasting into the local tool.

Accepted schema: book | total pages | pages already read. No AI response is executed as code.
