Mark Where a Scene's Tension Actually Changes — Free

Score each beat out of ten and the meter reads the change between them, so a scene that never moves is visible as a flat line instead of an impression.

What this replaces

Notes on pacing tend to be adjectives. This takes a level for each beat and reports the spread and the direction, so a scene that reads as tense but never changes is exposed by its own numbers.

Tool note. This runs entirely in your browser — no account, no upload, no paid API key. Google NotebookLM is named as the free source-grounded reading path for the material you paste; its published free-tier terms were checked on 2026-09-13 and can change.

The four passes

01

Collect the smallest useful input

One beat per line with a tension level out of ten.

02

Let the meter read the beats

Each frame carries its level and its distance from the low point.

03

Find the flat stretch

Consecutive beats at the same level are where a reader's attention drops.

04

Raise or lower one beat and rerun

The spread should widen; if it does not, the change did not land.

The board below runs in your browser. It opens with a worked sample so the result is visible before you paste anything; switch scenarios, edit the text, or reset to the sample.

Everything you paste stays in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and no request leaves the page to generate the result; clearing site data removes anything saved locally.

What breaks, and what to do

Levels guessed rather than felt

Score the beat as a reader would feel it, not as the writer intended it.

Beats of very different length

The meter reads levels, not duration; a long flat beat still drags.

More than ten levels

Anything above ten is clamped; keep the scale at ten.
