Get a First Job's Paperwork Filed in Order — Free

A first job comes with paperwork that nobody has seen before: a tax form, proof of the right to work, a bank account for the wages, a work permit if one applies, and rules about hours for someone of school age. Filings in one dated list with owners, it stops being an adult's problem discovered the week wages are due.

Why the flat version breaks

A checklist of documents misses the two things that actually go wrong: a bank detail that has not arrived, and a shift pattern that conflicts with school. Both are timing problems, and timing problems only show up when the items are dated.

How to file the binder in four passes

Write the documents the employer asks for, then add the ones they do not

Proof of right to work, a tax form and bank details are the set. Add the work permit or school-hours rules if they apply, because those are where a first job goes wrong rather than the passport.

Open the bank account before the start date

Wages need an account that exists, with details submitted in writing. This is the most common cause of a first pay packet arriving late, and it is entirely predictable.

Check the hours against school before the rota starts

Rules on hours, breaks and late finishes depend on age and on whether the person is still in compulsory education. Put it on the binder as an item with a date so it is checked in September, not during exam week.

Check the first payslip against the agreed rate

A dated item for the first payday: rate, hours, deductions and the tax code. Catching a wrong rate in the first month is straightforward; catching it in month six is a negotiation.

SAMPLE DATA, NOT A VERIFIED CLAIM: Café job · first shift 17 Oct 2026 · bank details 6 Oct · tax form 8 Oct · first payslip check 6 Nov. Replace these values with your own source before you rely on anything.

What breaks first

Handing over the original documents

Employers copy and return. Keep the originals and a photograph, and put the return of the documents on the binder as its own dated item.

Assuming the employer knows the school-age rules

Small employers often do not. Knowing your own limits — hours, rest breaks, late finishes — is what protects a first job from a rota that breaks the rules.

Leaving the payslip unchecked

An emergency tax code can swallow a fifth of a first wage packet, and it is correctable with one call. It only gets corrected if somebody reads the payslip and dates the check.
