Compare Measured Text-Spacing Heights with Fixed Component Boxes — Free

A spacing override can make text taller while a fixed container stays unchanged. Record the actual before-and-after heights and compare them with the box, rather than guessing clipping risk from font size alone.

The proof surface

Horizontal reflow tools inspect width overflow. This board checks a measured vertical relationship under a user-applied text-spacing override, retaining normal height, override height and existing headroom. It does not infer compliance from a geometry sum.

Sample, not your facts: Illustrative inputs: Consent caption | 40 | 62 | 56; Panel help | 28 | 34 | 44. Additional vertical review margin (CSS px) = 4. Sum of component growth requirements under the entered margin: 10 px summed required growth. All records are invented.

Before using the override-clip board

Measurements must use CSS pixels, the same viewport and font-loading state, and a consistent box/content definition. Use actual observed override content height, not a theoretical multiplier applied to normal height. Include the line wrapping and font behavior present in the tested component. The fixed box height must describe the space truly available to the content, with padding and borders reconciled outside this restricted model. The optional additional margin is your review buffer, not a WCAG-specified reserve. Normal and override heights can differ in either direction because the test conditions may alter wrapping; a decrease is not automatically rejected. The result names a required growth under these observations, while actual clipping or overlap needs direct browser and assistive-technology review.

Why the flat version breaks

Estimating override height from a font multiplier

Wrapping, font metrics and container width affect height. Multiplying normal height by a spacing factor does not measure the rendered content. Enter observed before-and-after values, and keep the test setup available for reproduction rather than describing an estimated height as a browser finding.

Mixing outer boxes with inner content space

Borders and padding can make an element's outer rectangle larger than the area available to text. The model needs a reconciled usable box height. Comparing different measurement conventions can create a false fit or false deficit; verify the browser measurements before assigning an issue.

Calling the summed deficit a conformance result

The tool cannot inspect whether text was actually lost, whether the override matches a criterion or whether controls remain usable. It also adds your optional margin. Keep the arithmetic as one review aid and obtain a qualified accessibility assessment rather than a pass/fail certificate from height totals.

How to work the override-clip board

Record the actual override conditions

Keep the tested spacing settings, viewport, font and measurement convention in your audit notes. This tool does not apply a browser override or inspect a page. Use anonymous component codes so the height log can be shared without user content. Do not label a test as a standards test unless the exact conditions were verified separately.

Measure content and usable box consistently

Capture normal content height, override content height and fixed usable box height in CSS pixels. Exclude or reconcile padding and borders under one stated convention. Scroll height, visual bounds and a specified CSS height are not automatically equivalent quantities. If the box grows naturally, a fixed-box calculation may not describe its actual behavior.

Separate height change from required growth

Override-minus-normal is the measured content-height change. Required growth is max(override height + supplied review margin - box height,0). The board shows both so existing headroom remains visible. Summed component requirements are an audit workload quantity across disjoint boxes, not a layout prediction or a standards severity score.

Verify the marked component in the browser

Apply the actual override and inspect clipping, content loss, overlap and interaction. Ask an accessibility specialist to review findings, including relevant assistive-technology behavior. A zero required-growth reading can coexist with other accessibility defects, and a positive reserve deficit may reflect your optional margin rather than actual content loss.

HYPOTHESIS / PROTOTYPE — checkout unavailable. Calculation is local. A draft is saved automatically in this browser profile when storage is available; Reset to sample clears it. Optional Pro history stores only five summaries and has its own deletion control. State links encode your inputs and can remain in browser history, clipboard or recipients’ records; share only non-sensitive rows. Optional external AI formatting leaves this device. The required site analytics beacon reports page activity; shared URLs contain encoded inputs. Do not treat an encoded URL as private. The calculator has no input-collection endpoint.

Measured-height comparison only, not a WCAG conformance certificate. Reproduce the actual spacing override and inspect content loss and interaction; ask a qualified accessibility specialist to review the test conditions and material findings.

Data note: The override-clip board processes Component code | normal content height px | override content height px | fixed box height px locally. Starter/sample selection and Run compute in this tab; no input is sent by the calculator. A local draft may be saved; explicit state-link sharing or optional external AI formatting can disclose inputs. Use non-sensitive labels.

The article demo above runs without limits. The companion app keeps a local history, exports the rows as CSV, prints the override-clip board reading, and holds your drafts on this device — one complete free app run; the proposed $4 one-time filing layer is not for sale.

The override-clip board answer stays complete for free. The proposed $4 one-time filing layer adds row CSV, print and five local reading summaries, not hidden answers. Checkout is unavailable; the article demo remains unlimited.

What this is built on

Before: spacing risk was guessed from a font change. After: measured override height, existing box room and optional margin have separate roles.

Three worked readings, with different inputs

Sample A — typical inputs

Consent caption | 40 | 62 | 56
Panel help | 28 | 34 | 44

Setting: Additional vertical review margin (CSS px) = 4. Expected summary: 10 px summed required growth.

Consent's observed override content is 62 px high; with the four-pixel review margin, it needs 66 px in a 56 px box, a ten-pixel growth requirement. Panel's 34+4 = 38 px fits its 44 px box and needs no growth. The sum is ten px across separate components, not a prediction that the page must grow by ten px or proof of a WCAG failure.

Sample B — changed plan

Address hint | 32 | 51 | 42
Error row | 22 | 41 | 30

Setting: Additional vertical review margin (CSS px) = 4. Expected summary: 28 px summed required growth.

Address requires 51+4-42 = thirteen px of extra room; Error requires 41+4-30 = fifteen. Their separate growth requirements sum to twenty-eight px. The measured normal-to-override increases, nineteen px for both, remain visible but are not the same as required box growth because existing headroom differs.

Sample C — boundary convention

No-change label | 20 | 20 | 24

Setting: Additional vertical review margin (CSS px) = 4. Expected summary: 0 px summed required growth.

Normal and override heights are both twenty px, and twenty plus the four-pixel margin exactly fits the twenty-four-pixel box. Required growth is zero. Equality is an arithmetic boundary, not an assurance that content, controls and relationships remain accessible. Clipping behavior, focus, visual overlap and actual text-spacing settings still need direct inspection.

Optional AI formatting, never the calculation

Manual entry completes this override-clip board for free without signup. If available to you, the free AI Studio interface linked in the sources may format fictional or non-sensitive notes; external access may require an account. No API key or AI call is built into this tool. Free-tier content may be used to improve products. Review each cell and transcribe it to the labeled row schema; do not paste the JSON object into the row box.

Format only these fictional or non-sensitive notes for a override-clip board. Return strict JSON shaped as {"rows": [{"label": "string", "cells": ["string", "string", "string"]}], "setting": "string"}. The columns are Component code | normal content height px | override content height px | fixed box height px; the setting is Additional vertical review margin (CSS px). Keep all supplied strings and quantities exactly; do not calculate, infer missing entries, invent dates or add advice. If any required value is missing, return an empty rows array and ask me for it separately. I will verify every cell against my source and manually transcribe rows using vertical bars before running the local calculator.

An AI response is not executed, fetched or trusted as a result. Missing values remain questions; the strict local parser checks the rows you actually enter.
