The workflow
Pick the trip type for the essentials
Beach, road trip, camping, or city — the essentials block changes with the type. That block is the part nobody thinks of until the drive.
List everyone actually going
Each person becomes an owner. Kids get age-sized categories — 'their own backpack' counts as a category, and it's the one that teaches the habit.
Read the board as a set of owners, not a list of things
Every category has a name next to it. If a category has no name, that's the gap — assign it before you pack, because an unowned category is the forgotten one.
Check the essentials block out loud the night before
Passports, chargers, meds, tickets — the essentials get checked by name, out loud, the night before. The board makes the check a ritual instead of a scramble.

What breaks this
Listing people who aren't packing (the toddler) is fine — give them 'their own backpack' so the category still has a name. Leaving a category unowned is the exact thing that gets forgotten — the board flags it.
