The workflow
Set the real election date
Primary, general, local — each has its own date. The card dates everything from the date you enter, so enter the one you're actually voting in.
Do the steps in order, not by preference
Registration closes before ballots mail, and ballots mail before election day. The order is the point — the card sorts them so the thing that closes first is the thing you do first.
Check the 'already due' lines immediately
If a step's date is behind today, it's not optional — it's late, and the card flags it. Late registration windows sometimes exist, but they're narrow; check now.
Confirm the details for your state or county
Deadlines vary by where you vote. The card uses sensible defaults and the dates you enter; the authoritative deadlines are on your state's official election site.

What breaks this
Entering the wrong date dates the whole card wrong — check the election date first. Doing the steps out of order is how the registration deadline passes while you shop for ID — the order is the point. Trusting the defaults over your state's site is the one mistake that costs the vote — the card is a starting point, and the official site is the authority.
