Balance Compost Bucket Volumes Without Guessing Carbon Ratios — Free
A bucket ratio is a repeatable mixing note, not a laboratory carbon-to-nitrogen result. Count the brown volume needed for the blend you chose while keeping that distinction visible.
The proof surface
Pantry and freezer tools track food portions. This plans separately handled compost batches by loose material volume and never estimates nutrient chemistry.
Why the flat version breaks
Calling the ratio a carbon assay
Volume does not measure elemental carbon or nitrogen.
Offsetting one batch with another
Extra browns already in one pile are not available to a separate fresh batch.
Treating a bucket as a fixed mass
Material density and compaction change mass per bucket substantially.
How to work the compost blend gauge
Count loose, similarly filled buckets. A compressed bucket of leaves cannot be compared honestly with a loosely filled bucket without noting the change.
Enter the brown-to-green volume ratio you intend to try. The sample ratio of 2 is illustrative, not an authoritative compost specification.
Missing browns are max(0, green buckets × ratio minus brown buckets). Three green and four brown buckets at ratio 2 need two more brown buckets.
Keep batches separate in this calculation. Check moisture, airflow and accepted materials with local guidance; do not assume a zero deficit proves the pile is healthy.
What the compost blend gauge replaces
| Question | Before | Visible working |
|---|---|---|
| Calling the ratio a carbon assay | Volume does not measure elemental carbon or nitrogen. | Choose a local recipe as your assumption |
| Offsetting one batch with another | Extra browns already in one pile are not available to a separate fresh batch. | Compute each batch deficit |
| Treating a bucket as a fixed mass | Material density and compaction change mass per bucket substantially. | Observe before repeating the recipe |
A local arithmetic aid replaces hand calculation, not expert review. No paid AI service is needed.

FIRST-LOAD
Research prototype — checkout unavailable. Input is processed locally and a draft is saved automatically in this browser profile when storage is available. Reset to sample clears that draft; Pro history has its own clear button. A state link encodes your inputs in its URL: share only non-sensitive rows. Browser history, clipboard and anyone receiving the link may retain it. Optional AI use below leaves this device; it is not required.
Volume bookkeeping only. This is not pathogen control, compost maturity certification or guidance for animal waste, hazardous material or food safety.
Data note: Everything runs in this browser tab on the compost blend gauge: your batch | green-material buckets | brown-material buckets stays on this device, nothing is uploaded, and the reading is rebuilt only when you press run.
Go deeper: the companion app files the same reading as a meter band gauge
The article demo above runs without limits. The companion app keeps a local history, exports the rows as CSV, prints the compost blend gauge reading, and holds your drafts on this device — one complete free run; the proposed $4 one-time filing layer is not currently for sale.
The compost blend gauge reading is complete for free. The optional $4 layer adds print, row CSV and the last five local reading summaries; it does not add hidden answers. Checkout is not configured yet; the article demo remains unlimited.

What this is built on
- Method: Missing browns are max(0, green buckets × ratio minus brown buckets). Three green and four brown buckets at ratio 2 need two more brown buckets.
- All sample records are invented examples. The app does not fetch measurements, policies, files or personal records.
- Google’s official pricing page, fetched 2026-09-29, lists free-tier access including AI Studio. Optional formatting only; limits and availability can change. Free-tier content may be used to improve products. Never paste private records there.
Before: Volume does not measure elemental carbon or nitrogen. After: the compost blend gauge shows the working beside each named row so the reader can change the assumption and inspect the consequence.
Optional AI formatting, not calculation
For this compost blend gauge, use the free AI Studio interface only if available to you, with no paid API key. Manual entry completes the same workflow for free. Supply only fictional or non-sensitive notes. Review its output against the source; never paste unresolved questions into the numeric rows.
Format my non-sensitive notes for a compost blend gauge. Return plain rows only: batch | green-material buckets | brown-material buckets. Preserve supplied quantities exactly. Do not guess missing values; list questions separately. Do not calculate or add advice. I will check every row before pasting into the local tool.
Accepted schema: batch | green-material buckets | brown-material buckets. No AI response is executed as code.
