Count Paint Cans From Coat-Adjusted Room Area — Free
A room’s raw wall area is not the quantity the tin label covers after multiple coats. Enter the already coat-adjusted area and your chosen can coverage to count whole cans, then see which room still needs stock.
The proof surface
Home-maintenance schedules track when work is due. This slip answers a different purchasing question: how many whole cans the measured, coat-adjusted area consumes, compared with cans already on the shelf.
Why the flat version breaks
Using floor area as wall area
A room footprint does not describe the wall surface. Measure each paintable plane or use a separately checked room-area method.
Entering the number of coats as area
Multiply area by coats before pasting, so the source of the assumption stays visible.
Treating label coverage as guaranteed
The result is a shopping estimate from the label figure, not a promise that the paint will cover a particular surface.
How to work the paint-can order slip
Use the area that will receive paint, after subtracting openings if you measured them. Multiply by the number of coats before entry; the calculator deliberately does not guess coverage or coat count.
Enter the label’s coverage per can in square metres for the paint and surface you actually chose. Porous plaster, texture, colour change and application method can alter real yield.
Required cans = ceiling of coat-adjusted area divided by coverage per can. Thirty-six square metres at ten square metres per can needs four cans, not 3.6.
A flagged row needs more cans than its entered stock. Add a separately chosen contingency only if you want one; the tool does not silently add waste or recommend a coating system.
What the paint-can order slip replaces
| Question | Before | Visible working |
|---|---|---|
| Using floor area as wall area | A room footprint does not describe the wall surface. Measure each paintable plane or use a separately checked room-area method. | Use the product label as the coverage input |
| Entering the number of coats as area | Multiply area by coats before pasting, so the source of the assumption stays visible. | Count whole cans for each room |
| Treating label coverage as guaranteed | The result is a shopping estimate from the label figure, not a promise that the paint will cover a particular surface. | Compare the order with what is on hand |

FIRST-LOAD
Input is processed locally and a draft is saved automatically in this browser profile when storage is available. Reset to sample clears that draft; Pro history has its own clear button. A state link encodes your inputs in its URL: share only non-sensitive rows. Browser history, clipboard and anyone receiving the link may retain it. Optional AI use below leaves this device; it is not required.
Quantity planning only. It is not a paint specification, lead-paint assessment, ventilation instruction or fire-safety review. Follow the product label, check local rules for older coatings, and use a qualified professional when the surface or exposure risk is uncertain.
Data note: Everything runs in this browser tab on the paint-can order slip: your room | coat-adjusted area m² | cans on hand stays on this device, nothing is uploaded, and the reading is rebuilt only when you press run.
Go deeper: the companion app files the same reading as a till receipt with a tear-off foot
The article demo above runs without limits. The companion app keeps a local history, exports the rows as CSV, prints the paint-can order slip reading, and holds your drafts on this device — one free run, then $ 4 one-time for the layer that keeps filing.
The paint-can order slip reading is complete for free. The optional $4 layer adds print, row CSV and the last five local reading summaries; it does not add hidden answers. Checkout is not configured yet; the article demo remains unlimited.

What this is built on
- Method: the equation is stated next to the result and uses only quantities entered by the reader.
- All sample records are invented examples. No standard, tariff, product rate, schedule or policy is fetched or represented as verified.
- For any threshold or rule, use the current value from the provider, handbook or qualified professional responsible for it.
Before: A room footprint does not describe the wall surface. Measure each paintable plane or use a separately checked room-area method. After: the paint-can order slip shows the working beside each named row so the reader can change the assumption and inspect the consequence.
Optional AI formatting, not calculation
For this paint-can order slip, an external AI text tool may help format non-sensitive notes if you already use one. No AI service or account is required: manual entry completes the same free core calculation. Do not paste private or sensitive data. Review every value against the source before using it.
Format my non-sensitive notes for a paint-can order slip. Return plain rows only: room | coat-adjusted area m² | cans on hand. Preserve supplied quantities exactly. Do not guess missing values; list questions separately. Do not calculate or add advice. I will check every row before pasting into the local tool.
Accepted schema: room | coat-adjusted area m² | cans on hand. No AI response is executed as code.
Walk three labelled examples
First reading. The invented sample North bedroom | 36 | 2 uses coverage in square metres per can = 10. The displayed whole cans required is 4.00000 cans. Follow the row note back to the measurements and conversion rather than treating the headline number as a recommendation. The sample is deliberately concrete so the reader can reproduce the arithmetic by hand.
Changed assumption. The alternate input Office | 18 | 2 produces 2.00000 cans for the displayed summary. Compare it with the first reading to see which entered quantity moves the result. In a real plan, change only the assumption that has a traceable source; do not tune a value just to make a row pass.
Boundary case. With Exact-fit wall set | 20 | 2 and the same setting, the worked result is 2.00000 cans. This case shows how the arithmetic behaves at a useful edge, not that the underlying process has been measured or verified. Check the boundary statement beside the result and confirm any consequential input with the responsible person before acting.
