Check a Performance Goal Against the Expected Pace

A mid-year review is easier when the gap is a number rather than an impression.

What this guide helps you do

Turn a target, a current value, and the share of the year elapsed into the expected pace and the gap.

Who this guide is for

Employees and supervisors preparing a mid-year performance conversation.

Use the source document or official route that applies to your situation. This guide does not contact another person or verify external information.

Steps

  1. Write the target

Write the number in the goal as it appears in the plan. Use the same unit throughout.

  2. Write the current value

Write what you have completed today, counted the same way as the target.

  3. Write the elapsed share

Write how much of the period has passed, in percent. Halfway is 50.

  4. Compute the pace

Multiply the target by the elapsed share. That is where an even pace would put you.

  5. Read the gap

Subtract the current value from the expected value. A negative number means you are ahead.

Worked example

Your target is 120 and you are at 70 halfway through the year. The expected pace is 60.0, you are 10.0 ahead, and you have completed 58.3 percent of the target.
